Program Overview
Note: This program is only open to current medical students, graduate students and physicians/professionals. Premedical students are not eligible.
Issues with sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain are common among all populations of patients, though are often seen as secondary to other medical conditions. What’s more, many physicians are unsure how to proceed with conversations about sexual health, leaving their patients at risk for decreased quality of life, depression, interpersonal conflicts, and potential noncompliance with medications. Physicians must have the ability to deftly and sensitively address sexual problems and support healthy sexuality. This program is dedicated to preparing participants to become leaders in this field, through the exploration of topics including sexual pleasure, sexual health history taking, sexual abuse, sexual self-esteem, tools and toys, adolescent sexual development, and more.

Why will I LOVE this Program?
Despite the high prevalence of sexual dysfunction among individuals in the U.S., many physicians feel inadequately prepared to manage sexual problems and support healthy sexuality. In fact, AMSA’s Sexual Health Scholars Program has found that 85% of medical students report receiving less than five hours of medical education dedicated to sexual health. In 2009, AMSA launched the Sexual Health Scholars Program to begin to address the lack of knowledge and skills training of American medical students in sexual health. This is your opportunity to develop knowledge and skills regarding sexual health care and become a leader in this field!
