This month’s Chapter Spotlight is University of Minnesota – Twin Cities! AMSA’s Chapter at University of Minnesota – Twin Cities strives for all their members to be well-balanced pre-medical students. While having a good MCAT score, GPA, and resume is important to medical school applications, this AMSA chapter believes their members will stand out by their commitment to improving our community and advocating for health locally and globally.
Chapter Objective:
University of Minnesota – Twin Cities (UMN) Pre-Med AMSA Chapter is a professional pre-medical student organization. We strive for all our members to be well-balanced pre-medical student. While having a good MCAT score, GPA, and resume is important to medical school applications, we believe our members will stand out by their commitment to improving our community and advocating for health locally and globally. UMN Pre-Med AMSA is committed to volunteering and giving back to the community through lending our time, money, and effort to important causes. We are also committed to improving health care and its delivery to all people; involving its members in the social, moral, and ethical obligations of the profession of medicine.
How did your chapter support this objective?
We support this objective by holding events almost every week for all of our members. Some of these events include local volunteer opportunities around Minneapolis at places such as the Ronald McDonald House and People Serving People. We also hold a Suture Clinic – this is an event where the National Guard comes in and teaches our students about emergency medicine, and provides every student with the opportunity to try their hand at suturing!
The Pre-Med Dinner is a favorite event among our members. The dinner allows for students to meet physicians from the University and talk to them about their specialties and research. Many students leave this event with research and shadowing opportunities. We also hold application and interview workshops for the older students applying to medical school. Along with these opportunities, UMN Pre-Med AMSA provides a chance for pre-meds to make connections with each other and form lifelong connections.
What does the leadership team to contribute to the success of the chapter as a whole?
The leadership team plans out the events listed above, invites physicians to talk about their specialties and life as a physician at our weekly meetings, and plans events where Pre-Meds can bond and have fun! We also keep track of every student that attends these events, and we reward the students that have been heavily involved with AMSA at an an annual Pre-Med Brunch!
