Donation of medical textbooks and journals is a wonderful and easy way to help promote education and autonomy in underserved areas. As a general rule texts and journals should not be more than 8 yrs old or more than one edition old. There are several organizations listed that you can donate through but in many schools there are students going abroad during 4th year and 1st year summer that can deliver books directly. Also in schools that have used textbook sales, the left over books can then be donated. As a final note, do not forget about domestic outlet for medical texts, such as rural/inner city health centers and Indian reservation libraries.

Global Medical Libraries (GML) works diligently to shrink the health sciences educational gap in developing countries by providing doctors and nurses in the field with the latest professional information they need to most effectively serve their communities. The ongoing medical education of local health care professionals arms them with crucial medical knowledge, positively influencing healing outcomes for their patients. Since the program’s inception in April 2007, more than $2.5M of dentistry, nursing and medical textbooks for formal and continuing education have been donated to academic and medical institutions located in over 30 countries spread over 5 continents at no charge to the recipients or to their governments.By donating your health sciences educational resources to GML you will enhance the level of education for health care professionals in developing countries worldwide; and professionals who have previously been hampered by a lack of up-to-date materials with which to efficiently learn, to teach, and to provide health care to populations that desperately need their expertise. Watch this Voice of America segment to see how GML book donations are being used in Afghanistan. Please email info@globalmedicallibraries.org with questions and/or book drive inquiries. GML is a perfect spring project for medical schools, especially for institutions with a global health program! - Sabre Foundation
