Calling All Abortion Justice & Reproductive Freedom Dreamers & Doers!
There is nothing funny about denying people the right to abortion care. But using humor and wit to skewer those who use abortion to make power-grabs, and inspire action in the fight for abortion access and reproductive freedom in the process. Now that’s what joy in the midst of sorrow can look like.
By the end of 2022, abortion care may be illegal or extremely restricted in as many as 26 states, should the US Supreme Court rule, as it is expected to, against recognition of federal protection of the right to abortion care, effectively reversing the 1973 decision in Roe vs. Wade. Many have been warning of and preparing for this likelihood for many years, but just because it isn’t surprising, doesn’t mean it isn’t enraging. Now, more than ever, it is important to harness the power of our anger and rage and direct it where it needs to be directed: at getting the health care we need, when we need it, and ensuring our laws recognize the full humanity, agency, and bodily autonomy of all people.
Humor and wit can help us harness our rage, keep ourselves from misdirecting that rage inward, toward allies, or letting it overwhelm us. And right now, we could use a big dose of both. So, let’s claim our right to laugh – to laugh through the rage right into action. Let’s fight this fight and claim our joy!
