Sonia Mia Diaz, known to family & friends as Mia, is a fourth year medical student at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, currently completing her elective rotations in Miami, FL. Originally from Orlando, FL Mia has always been an advocate for reproductive health. She has served a medical volunteer at her local Planned Parenthood and as president of her school’s chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association. During her time in basic sciences she designed and completed a pilot study to investigate if current curriculum sufficiently prepared students to equitably treat LGBTQIA* patients. She also developed a LGBTQIA* sensitivity workshop for educators on Sint Maarten. She has been a participant in multiple courses provided by AMSA’s Reproductive Scholar’s program and served as a course facilitator. As a course director her goal is to support students in expanding their knowledge of reproductive health and justice through honest and open dialogue.
