1. Vote on Betsy DeVos delayed:
Your calls and work makes a difference! They keep on delaying it to try to get more votes. But, as mentioned earlier, only ONE MORE Republican needs to be swayed. Keep making those calls. Have on Monday morning! Leave a voicemail or send a fax.
2. Cleveland Clinic Petition to make CCF cut ties with Trump
As most of you know from the last email, this petition has been circulating to make sure the CCF cuts ties. It’s even garnered national attention. Add your signature!
 Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Social Security Administration relating to Implementation of the NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007.
aka. wait, what?
tl;dr – stops the Social Security Administration from telling the FBI about disability insurance recipients who have mental impairments that should disqualify them from buying guns.

This is a big deal, and it’s easy to get lost with all the news about something ‘small’ like this going through. Your rep MUST be held accountable. 

4. Your WTF bills of the day: (SPECIAL ATTN TO H.R.172)

  • This bill prohibits the federal government from taking discriminatory action against a person on the basis that such person believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that: (1) marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or (2) sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.
  • tl;dr – it basically legitimizes the so-called ‘religious freedom’ bills. A way to undermine legalization of equal marriage.
  • BONUS: It also goes on to define a “person” to include corporations or other entities in the same vein
  • H.R. 172: To restore the Free Speech and 1st amendment rights of churchs and exempt orgs by repealing the 1954 Johnson Amendment

    • It REPEALS the prohibition (allowing for) against churches and other tax-exempt orgs participating in political campaigns or supporting opposing candidates for public office
    • Effectively blurring the lines in the separation of church and state. The Johnson Amendment was a good amendment for a reason.
  • H.R. 367: Hearing Protection Act of 2017

    • A small bill to get rid of the $200 transfer tax on firearm silencers. The title is very misleading. This is a gun bill to decrease financial barriers to purchasing gun accessories. This is just a general fyi for whether you like or dislike guns.
  • H.R. 38: Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017

    • Allows a person to carry a concelaed handgun into or possess a concealed handgun in another state that allows individuals to carry concealed firearms.
    • This ALSO allows a qualified individual to carry or possess a concealed handgun in a school zone and in federally owned lands that are open to public
    • opinion: yeah, that’ll go over well.

1. Betsy DeVos
 

2 Republicans (Murkoski from AK, and Collins from ME) voted against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as the Education Secretary. This means, we need ONE MORE. And good thing for us, there’s much to choose from. Lines may be busy right now, but this is something you can do first thing in the morning:

  • Make sure Betsy DeVos is not confirmed as Secretary for the Department of Education. Start calling now!
  • MOST LIKELY TO FLIP
  • NO OFFICIAL POSITIONS STATED

2. Trump’s Supreme Court Pick

As promised, Trump’s Supreme Court pick was one for the far right. Here are some of his stances:
LGBT
Gorsuch has signaled a robust view of religious freedom rights, primarily through Obamacare-related cases, and he could join with other conservatives to rule that individuals and businesses sometimes have the right to discriminate against gays for religious reasons
Whether federal civil rights laws cover discrimination against transgender individuals is an issue currently before the court, but it’s possible that particular case goes away before Gorsuch makes it to the bench. In October, the justices agreed to hear a case involving a transgender boy’s right to use the boys’ bathroom at his Virginia public high school.
Immigration Ban
Currently unknown. His stance on religious freedom might lead him to be skeptical about rules that are arguably designed to impact a particular religion. However, on history, Conservative SC tend to be deferential to the exec branch on security-related issues
Labor Unions
Conservatives are no bueno for labor unions
Choice
He’s Pro-life. He ruled in support of the 2013 Hobby Lobby Case. You can read more about his anti-choice sentimenthere.

 

3. Residency Work Hours! 

We will be delivering the petition this weekend in Chicago where ACGME is meeting to discuss more their removal of the safety precautions of work hour limits! So please sign the petition if you haven’t and get your classmates to sign it!

4. Town Hall Project 

I’ve been working a lot to find quick and easy ways for all of you to get involved locally. This is something all of you can do: TOWN HALLS. 
Working with a syndicate of other grassroots organizations, we developed a list of upcoming town halls. The continued update will be on the shoulders of others as convention is upcoming.

6. EO on public charge 
Had a conference call this afternoon with NILC [then a follow up conversation] about the current standing EO (executive order) on Public Charge. Please note it hasn’t been signed yet, but there are a number leaked draft EOs since last week and about 3 of the 7 EOs have been signed. This is one of the 4 remaining that has yet to be signed, or even publicized much. 
 
Public Charge is different from the refugee/muslim ban, the wall, or even the ACA repeal in that it’s much more insidious. It’s intended to divide communities and sow the seeds of distrust. It will cause chaos. It’ll make people afraid to get services and sponsor immigrants. 
It is defined as charges that allow federal immigration authorities to deport immigrants who become dependent on social programs. The draft EO expands the type of benefits that would be considered in a public charge. For instance, health coverage, institutionalized care, etc. This effectively limits the help immigrants can get to allow them to get back on their feet. Furthermore, sponsors would be responsible/liable or any benefits that the immigrant uses and gives the power to go after those sponsors for repayment. It gives more teeth. 
 
tl;dr Less programs for immigrants because if they use it, they can not only be deported, but their sponsors are held liable. Sponsors won’t want to sponsor. Immigrants will be come sicker and die.

7. Advocacy Successes (not all doom and gloom yo)
 
For everyone who DID something, small or big, your efforts have been successful.
Because of you:
1. Federal hiring freeze is reversed for VA (Veteran Affairs).
2. Court order Partial stay of the immigration ban for those with valid visas.
3. Green card holders can get back in country.
4. Uber pledges $3M and immigration lawyers for its drivers after #DeleteUber trends on Twitter.
5. Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) enrollment ads are still going to air.
6. The ACLU raised 24M over the weekend (normally 3-4Mil/year).
7. HHS, EPA, USDA gag order lifted.
8. EPA climate data no longer scrubbed from website.
9. More people of different career/religious/economic/race backgrounds are considering running for political office than ever before.
10. MOST importantly, since we live in a participatory democracy, the people are engaged.
11. #donoharm day of action Jan 30th! Please, all of you give Kamini Doobay (brd1) a round of applause for an awesome day of action across the country that garnered attention from NYT and various other media outlets! Mallika (cph.chair) did a fantastic job representing Louisville. 
While more is needed, sometimes you have to celebrate your wins. Stay vigilant, but also take self care seriously. Activist burnout is a thing. Marathon, don’t sprint.

As you know, during the post-election, “lame-duck” session of Congress, the Obama administration is expected to try and ram a TPP vote through. We cannot let that happen!  If ratified, it will destroy jobs, increase the power of multinational corporations to overturn rules and laws that protect workers and the public, undermine environmental and food safety laws, and hurt access to medicines. The TPP will further profit multinational corporations and undermine our very democracy, while putting public health at risk and destroying the jobs of American workers.

 Now is the time. From now until December 16th, the access to medicines movement must focus on stopping the TPP, which could come up for a vote anywhere from Nov. 14th-December 16th. This vote may be sudden, and every single vote will count, as it could come down to just a few votes needed to win. That why dozens of organizations are gearing up to direct their members to call Congress this November 15, 16 and 17, during the first week representatives are back for the lame-duck session.
For the rest of October and November, we are pushing to make sure Congress will not ratify the biggest trade deal in history.

What can you do this month to be an effective advocate?

Reach out to as many people as you can this month and get them to sign onto this pledge to flood Congress with calls the day a vote comes up (That same fill out pledge form also will let you know via phone or email that the TPP has gone up for a vote).

  • We know the TPP is bad, but why is it so bad exactly? Brook Baker, senior policy analyst at Health GAP and Northeastern University law professor, will explain the language and policies reflected in the TPP that will spell public health disaster. Hilary McQuie, Director of US Policy at Health GAP will explain what anti-TPP advocacy looks like on Capitol Hill, and Emily Sanderson, SGAC National Organizer, will explain what our grassroots strategy is between now and the end of Obama’s term as president.

Nov 15: Nation-wide call-in and Thunderclap

  • Last month, when we participated in this nation wide call-in, there were over 35,000 calls placed to the White House opposing the TPP in one day. 1.6 million people were reached via social media and 15 million emails were sent alerting people to the call-in day
  • We will be participating in the next nation-wide call in on November 15th. Mark it on your calendars, plan to table at your school, and get 5 friends to make the call after you do. We will send a script when the day comes closer.

Nov 17: Protest the TPP in Washington D.C.

  • A mobilization of allies from the labor movement, environmental activists, and access to medicines activists will rise up with our collective voice and tell Congress: NO TPP!

  • Search for bird-dogging opportunities where your Rep. will be speaking publicly, and ask them if they will oppose the TPP when it comes for a vote.
  • Organize one call-in per week to their district office so that Members of Congress are hearing their constituents’ opposition to the TPP.
  • Get as many people as possible to fill out this form (same as the pledge form above), including yourself,  and we will let you know via phone or email that the TPP has gone up for a vote.

AMSA–Take action against rolling back residency work hour restrictions!

ACGME is meeting in Chicago this month to discuss the the possibility of removing residency work hour restrictions, effectively going back to the time of being more tired and more overworked than residents already are. We agree that residency training should ultimately be designed to produce competent, autonomous, caring physicians. To that end, it’s important to the mental and physical health of future physicians that training should reflect an environment that can maximize that goal.

We continue to recommend that the number of hours a resident physician may work per week should not exceed an absolute limit of 80 without averaging. We believe that the maximum number of hours worked consecutively per shift should not exceed 16, no matter the stage of training and that residents should have at least 10 hours off between shifts.

North Carolina House Bill 2 (HB2) is an unnecessarily discriminatory act against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people of North Carolina. AMSA strongly opposes House Bill 2, as it directly harms the rights and the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in North Carolina.

AMSA Appropriations!

Get involved in the important federal budget process with AMSA!

Appropriations is a yearly process where Congress, specifically the appropriations committees in the Senate and the House, come together to discuss how the money they have been allocated will be spent (for a deeper dive, check out RESULTS Appropriations and Federal Budget page).  We have the opportunity to impact this process each year by meeting with our Senator’s and Representative’s offices.  Especially those who are on the Appropriations committee!

AMSA Appropriations “Wish-list”

Domestic TB (CDC)

POTUS Budget:$142.2 million

Flat funding, even though has called for increased funds to develop new diagnostics and treatment for TB, the number one infectious killer worldwide

AMSA ASK:$243 million

Global TB (USAID)

POTUS Budget: $191 million

This is a 19% funding cut to USAID’s global TB program for the third year in a row, despite the release of the National Action Plan to Combat MDR-TB, a plan with ambitious 5 years goals for treating 200,000 more MDR-TB patients and reducing MDR in the U.S. by 15% by 2020.

AMSA ASK: $400 million

Global HIV/AIDS (PEPFAR)

POTUS Budget: $4.65 billion

Flat funding, even though the WHO updated guidelines just this year calling on all countries to implement programs to initiate treatment immediately upon diagnosis and several civil society orgs have called for a scale up in treatment to meet the UNAIDS fast track goals of ending the epidemic by 2030.

AMSA ASK: $4.845 billion

To get us back on track towards the UNAIDS Fast Track goals towards an AIDS-free generation

Fight Racial Stigmas and Scaremongering–Lunch Seminars on Migrant Children’s Health

To raise awareness on the issue of scaremongering among medical professionals and those in training, the Migrant Children and Health Campaign created a video featuring leaders in immigrant and refugee health advocacy. This 9 minute video is a great way to introduce people to the facts showing that migrant children are no significant health threat.  Check out this advocacy toolkit on migrant children health, which you can use to hold a lunchtime seminar to equip fellow students with the knowledge to fight against racial stigmas.

75% of children around the world are unprotected against pneumonia–the leading infectious cause of childhood death worldwide.                                                  

PCV or pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, produced by Pfizer and GSK, is used around the world but for many in developing world the vaccine’s high price is  prohibitive.

Tell Senator Graham to Restore $300m to PEPFAR!

AIDS Advocacy Action

As an appropriations leader, Senator Graham is an important player in global funding and particularly in the fate of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).  Restoring $300m to the program is essential to keeping us on track to end AIDS.  Senator Graham committed to AMSA activists multiple times on the campaign trail that he would restore funds if the budget caps were lifted.NOW is the time!

Please join AIDS activists across the country by calling Senator Graham’s office (202) 224-5972, Thursday, 11/19/15 and stating, “An AIDS-free generation is within our reach.  As our consistent champion will Senator Graham assure that $300m is restored to PEPFAR as he promised many students in Iowa and NH this fall?”
