Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Medical School Chapter Leaders Summit

April 25-26, 2009


The third annual Summit of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Medical School Chapter Leaders will bring LGBT and ally medical students together for mutual discussion around how to run a successful LGBT Medical Student Group.

Students will participate in a two-day summit with LGBT Health experts and community leaders. Interactive and social programming will help build friendships that last throughout medical school.

The focus of this year's summit will be on forming alliances with non-LGBT students to generate a more LGBT friendly environment at your institution and help train more LGBT competent physicians.

Fees Due Upon Acceptance: $150
Number of Spots: 16

Application Process: Application will consist of questions relating to experience in LGBT issues, other leadership experience, and the climate for LGBT students at your school. Application Deadline: February 13, 2009.

Selection Criteria: Applicants will be selected based on the quality of their application, leadership experience, and interest in making change at their schools and ideas for how to do so. Previous experience with AMSA or the Gender and Sexuality Committee is not required.

Knowledge

  • Learn how to work with LGBT and ally medical students effectively to create an open and informed environment at your institution.
  • Understand the different routes for curricular reform on LGBT issues at medical schools
  • Be familiar with the resources available through AMSA for LGBT medical students and undergrads

Skills

  • Create a new group or expand the existing LGBT medical student group at your school
  • Implement improved LGBT health curriculum

Attitudes

  • Be ready to work for change!
  • Be excited to work with LGBT and allies in an open and fun environment!

Participant Expectations:

  • Create or improve upon LGBT health programming and student group activities at your home institution
  • Communicate the outcomes of your project to institute planners
  • Make strong efforts to expand your group at home to include LGBT AND ally students in both leadership and programming.
