EXPECTATIONS
- Accepted Institute participants are required to be on three pre-institute conference calls. Pre-conference call 1 will be on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 8PM EST. Pre-call 2 will be on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 8PM EST. Pre-call 3 will be on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at 8PM EST.
- Accepted participants are required to be on two post-institute conference calls. Post-conference call 1 will be on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at 8PM EST. Post-call 2 will be on Sunday, January 25, 2008 at 8PM EST.
- Accepted participants must purchase their plane ticket to the institute and e-mail their flight itinerary to amsa.premed.ghli@gmail.com by Monday, October 20, 2008.
- Accepted participants are not required but are strongly encouraged to attend the AMSA National Convention from March 11-15, 2009 in Washington, DC.
- Accepted participants must be committed to becoming AMSA Premed leaders at any level or capacity. Whether that means running or applying for a national leadership position, a position at a local chapter, or by simply being an active AMSA member and leading through example.
- Accepted participants will work in groups of three to create one module per group. Each group will be assigned a topic from the list of Content Areas above. Prior to the Institute group members will communicate over the phone to do research and lay the ground work for their modules. During the Institute group members will work with field experts to create a module that manifests into a 20 minute presentation. Each group will present their module to the rest of the Institute participants at the completion of the weekend.
DETAILS
Participants must arrive on Friday evening November 7, 2008, and are expected to stay until 4pm on Monday, November 10th. We ask that your school/chapter provide the cost of transportation as well as a $25.00 program fee to show their commitment to leadership training. However, if your school/chapter is unable to cover these costs you will be required to find another source of funding as the Institute does not have the means to cover these costs. The Institute will provide airport pick-up/drop-off, food, and housing throughout the entire course of the Institute. To participate in the Premed GHLI you must be an AMSA Premed member. If you are not an AMSA Premed member you may apply, however, you must be a Premed AMSA member to attend the Institute.
APPLICATIONS
SPACE IS LIMITED SO APPLY NOW. Only twelve applicants will be accepted. Applications are accepted on a ROLLING BASIS. Submit all of the following material by October 5, 2008 as attachments in one e-mail:
- Your resume/CV including your name, school you attend, year in school, and complete contact information. (Please provide an address for the state in which you are a registered voter, and an address where you currently reside if you do not reside in the state where you are a voter.)
- Please describe a specific "global" health experience you have had within the span of a day and what lesson it taught you. Remember that “global” includes work you have done within the United States. 250 words max.
- How can advocacy work (lobbying, call-ins, grassroots campaigns, etc.) help end global health inequalities? 250 words max.
- If selected to attend the Institute which of the Content Areas listed above would you feel most competent in creating a module?* And Why? 250 words max. Modules are explained above under the expectations heading. *If you have experience or feel comfortable with more than one of the four Content Areas listed, or if you have no preference, please inform us.
- Why do you want to attend this Institute and what do you hope to gain from attending? 100 words max.
- Please include the following statement in your application "I am an AMSA member (or soon to be pending processing). My AMSA I.D. number is ______. I understand that I will arrange for my own travel, with expenses paid by my own funding source, to arrive at the Washington-Dulles airport on Friday evening, November 7th, and I will stay for the entire Leadership Institute until Monday, November 10th at 4pm." *All participants will be informed of acceptance decisions by midnight on Monday, October 6, 2008. Accepted participants must respond to acceptance e-mail within 14 hours of receiving it.

First Annual Premed Global Health Leadership Institute Lobby Day at the Nation's Capitol.
The Premed Global Health Leadership Institute was created to provide guidance, leadership skills, and motivation to premed students interested in global health. The goals of the weekend include, but are not limited to the following:
- To train students interested in global health to become more effective leaders
- To equip tomorrow's global health leaders with concrete skills (i.e.: lobbying & public speaking)
- To promote self-reflection in each participant's journey to becoming their ideal global health leader
- To educate health professional students on various global health content issues
- To network and build a community of activists that are willing to work together for pressing global health causes
- To brainstorm ideas for activities, activism, and policy changes
